Author's Introduction
مقدمة المؤلف
This is a concise manual presented according to the school of Imam al-Shafi'i — may God's mercy and good pleasure be upon him. I have confined it to the positions that al-Rafi'i and al-Nawawi, or one of them, held to be the soundest opinion within the school. At times I mention a difference of opinion between them in certain cases: when their rectifications diverge, I give precedence to al-Nawawi's rectification and state it with certainty, so that the opposing view represents al-Rafi'i's rectification.
This aligns with al-Rafi'i's definitive correction.
I have named it: 'Umdat al-Salik wa 'Uddat al-Nasik (The Reliance of the Wayfarer and the Tool of the Worshipper).
I ask God to make it of benefit, for He is my sufficiency and the best of guardians.
